If you do it right, you can run the single RPM lead back into the motherboard 3pin so the RPM's are still monitored. If the cooling is OK and it is just a noise problem, then a cheap fix is to use the +5 volt instead of the normal +12 volt by re-wiring a 4pin - 3pin adapter. This is the one I bought thermaltake but any HSF with 4 or more heat pipes and a large fan would work. I had to pull the mombo out but it was worth it. I decided it was cheaper to put in a good HSF then replace the CPU. I spent an hour looking around at various HSF devices before spending a bunch for a good one.
